Amy Biehl Foundation: Press Release Nov 2009 - 2009-11-30
Amy Biehl Foundation Benefits from Vehicle Sponsorship, Despite the Recession Press Release, 26 November 2009
The Amy Biehl Foundation is in a position to greatly improve its efficiency in rendering valuable developmental and empowerment programmes to township youth, thanks to a gracious sponsorship from Reeds Motor Group. The Opel Corsa will ensure that members of the Foundation will have improved mobility in reaching the youngsters, aged five to 18 years old.
Foundation Chief Executive Officer, Kevin Chaplin, says, “It is such an encouragement to receive this kind of support from a company operating in an industry that we know from media reports is struggling to manage the current tough economic conditions. It proves that corporate social responsibility is at the core in comparison with so many other organisations that have down-scaled their CSR over the past few months.”
According to Director of Reeds, Kevin Denicker, the sponsorship was made in recognition of the tremendous effort and sustainable management of the various programmes initiated by the Foundation. “We truly believe that the Foundation is committed to making a difference through community building efforts by tackling crime, HIV Aids, gangs, violence and poverty in order to give children hope and a brighter future.”
The Foundation is named after Amy Biehl, an American Fullbright Scholar who was the victim of political mob violence in Gugulethu outside of Cape Town in 1993. Its programmes are aimed at allowing the children to supplement what they learn during the course of the school day with creative programmes that let them express themselves and think freely in an imaginative environment. More than 1 000 children benefit every week from, among others:
After School Care Music including Violin, Guitar, Recorder, Marimba, Choral Singing and Brass HIV/AIDS Peer Education & Prevention.
Greening and Environment.
Youth Reading Role Model Literacy.
Creative Arts including Painting, Pottery, Beading, Drama and Dance – Kwaito, Modern, Traditional and Ballet.
