When journalist Tracy Lee Stark from The Citizen was recently invited to take part in an advanced Isuzu 4x4 driver training session at the Isuzu Off-Road Academy, based at the Gerotek testing facility close to Pretoria, she found that the D-Max she was given to drive stole the show.
Starting at the Gerotek testing facility, Stark’s adventure took her and a group of other 4x4 enthusiasts to the Hennops Off-Road Trail, which has been tailored to give 4x4 drivers the pleasure of putting their vehicles to the test in a challenging, yet fully controlled environment. The track is known for its host of obstacles, which include mud holes, rocky hills, steep descends and a whole lot of dongas. Stark was initially daunted at the thought of tackling the technical track, but quickly found herself enjoying the experience as she accepted the exact guidance of the academy instructors, and found that the bakkie was willing to do most of the work.
Tracy said that driving the Isuzu was an amazing experience and that she only needed to take care of the steering while the bakkie was in auto-drive mode. She was able to put her full trust in the vehicle, knowing that the engineering and computing would take care of the rest. “Technically, with such advanced vehicles on the road,,” she said, “it should be easier to answer the age-old question of who’s the better driver - men or women? The answer, of course, is the Isuzu."
